Cyber Drama
highly doubt that most people who read here have the same Internet diet of webcomics, video game sites, and other web pages that delve into general geekery, so you have no doubt missed a week of "news" that no one really cares about (if you look hard enough you might be able to find a story buried deep in a real site like cnn.com or msnbc.com but I doubt it). Anyway, there is the guy named Jack Thompson. If you have ever been flipping through cable news channels and there was a talking head "specialist" talking about how evil video games are and how he has sat in cells with kids who have killed because they were inspired by a video game, that was probably Jack Thompson. The guy is apperently half crazy and a big jerk.
Last week, he made a "modest proposal", where he outlined a video game he wanted to see made where a father, who's son was killed by a violent gamer in turn goes violent on the video game industry and starts offing developers and gaming publishers. He even offered to donate $10,000 to the charity of choice that the owner of Take Two Interactive (the company that created Grand Theft Auto, and Jack's arch rival). So he makes this offer, and the Internet goes ablaze. Some just take to making fun, others actually try having "intellegent" discussion with Jack. After all of this breaks out, another organization that wishes to keep violent video games out of the hands of kids, publishes an open letter to distance themself from Jack Thompson, because they think he has gone to far (and is crazy). As you can imagine, someone cllaed Thompson on this and a group of modders programmed a mod for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that created Jack's game. Of course, he balks and claims the whole thing was satire. While, I can see how is offer could be considered satircal, you don't offer to give money to a charity as part of a satire. That is just really freaking low. However, in the end Thopson got Punk'd because the cool guys at Penny Arcade, went ahead and donated the $10,000 to the charity of choice of the president of Take Two, in Thompson's name. Since he is a crazy lawyer, and over all just got made out to look like a complete dumb butt (which was all his own fault), he will no doubt be sueing someone over this soon for character defamation or some crap like that.
